TRUE Zero Waste Workshop

Join Illinois Green and GBCI for a workshop diving into TRUE Zero Waste on September 25 - Day 2 of the Drawdown Summit! Workshop attendees will learn how their business or institution can advance its solid waste and recycling goals with fiscally responsible strategies. This workshop will present TRUE, a rigorous new standard which moves beyond others by focusing on how we operate our businesses, factories and institutions.

TRUE (Total Resource Use & Efficiency) Zero Waste Certification enables facilities to define, pursue and achieve their Zero Waste goals while cutting their carbon footprint, supporting public health and maximizing profits. TRUE certification is offered through Green Business Certification Inc.(GBCI) a program for businesses to access performance in reducing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. GBCI continuing education credits will be available to attendees. This informative and interactive educational workshop will provide you the tools and resources to begin and further your zero waste journey and increase your efficiency and your bottom line.

Instructor: Susie Westrup, Director, TRUE Zero Waste

PHIUS+ Source Zero Workshop

Join Illinois Green and PHIUS for a workshop diving into net zero building methodology on September 25 - Day 2 of the Drawdown Summit!

PHIUS+ Source Zero provides a conservation first design methodology to net zero building with quality assurance throughout design and construction. It emphasizes utilizing passive building techniques to reduce both annual and peak energy consumption. This workshop will cover the evolution of passive building including principles and development of the standard. It will also dive into the certification requirements and provide brief demonstration of the WUFI Passive energy model, which is used for design and compliance.  Lastly it will touch on how utilizing passive building for net zero design can lower the overall impact of net zero buildings on the grid. Learn more about PHIUS+ Source Zero here.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the core passive building strategies and how they can be applied to all buildings.
  • Understand how the climate specific passive building standards were developed, and the main certification requirements.
  • Identify the capabilities of the WUFI Passive energy model as both a design and compliance tool.
  • Interpret how passive building as a baseline for net zero building can provide benefit to the electric grid.

Instructor: Lisa White, Certification Manager, Passive House Institute US

Continuing Education: Self-report 3.5 continuing education hours toward maintaining your LEED professional credential. Pending approval for 3.5 AIA LUs

Mass Timber Construction & Mid-Rise Design Workshop

Join Illinois Green and Woodworks for a workshop diving into Mass Timber Construction & Mid-Rise Design on September 25 - Day 2 of the Drawdown Summit! Workshop attendees will participate in back-to-back sessions exploring the technical details and best practices of building with wood.

Part 1: Mass Timber Construction - Products, Performance and Design

Due to their high strength, dimensional stability and positive environmental performance, mass timber building products are quickly becoming materials of choice for sustainably-minded designers. This presentation will provide a detailed look at the variety of mass timber products available, including glue-laminated timber (glulam), cross laminated timber (CLT), nail laminated timber (NLT), heavy timber decking, and other engineered and composite systems. Applications for the use of these products under modern building codes will be discussed, and examples of their use in U.S. projects reviewed. Mass timber’s ability to act as both structure and exposed finish will also be highlighted, as will its performance as part of an assembly, considering design objectives related to structural performance, fire resistance, acoustics, and energy efficiency. Other topics will include detailing and construction best practices, lessons learned from completed projects and trends for the increased use of mass timber products in the future.

Part 2: Mid-Rise Design - Opportunity and Implementation

As increases in urban density become necessary to address growing populations, many building designers and developers are leveraging wood’s ability to achieve multiple, simultaneous objectives. Wood is a code-compliant solution to the challenge of how to cost-effectively increase density while creating vibrant and sustainable communities. Yet many familiar with the design of two- to four-story wood structures are not aware that the International Building Code allows five stories and more of wood-frame construction for residential uses such as student, senior and affordable housing, and for business, mercantile and military occupancies. Through an overview of design, detailing, and construction considerations, this presentation is intended to give architects and engineers the confidence to break into this growing market segment. Heights and areas will be discussed, including allowable increases, as will fire-resistive design, detailing for performance, shrinkage, structural framing, acoustics, and fire-rated assemblies.
